Tooth Extraction

The intended benefit of an extraction is to relieve your current symptoms and/or to permit you to continue with any additional treatment.

Teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed, have advanced periodontal disease or have broken down in ways that cannot be repaired. Teeth may require removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. In the case of complex surgical or wisdom teeth extractions, the dentist may refer the patient to an oral surgeon specialist for treatment.

It's important to save your teeth whenever possible.

Tooth extraction is not usually the recommended treatment for functional teeth that can be saved by root canal therapy and a crown. Even though an extraction procedure costs less than a root canal, tooth loss causes other teeth to shift and can damage the bite, so replacement of lost teeth with an implant or bridge becomes necessary (which are more costly procedures than a root canal and crown).

Following Tooth Extraction

Smoking, vigorous brushing and rinsing and drinking liquids through straws are discouraged during the post-operative period because they hinder healing and may cause the wound to open. Cold compresses applied to the outside check near the extraction area can help reduce any swelling and promote faster healing.
